Razzmatazz was my very first big band composition - it's like the "big brother," the model of sorts for all my other compositions that followed. For the year leading up to writing the song, I kept badgering my high school band director, telling him that I was going to write a piece for the jazz band and that we needed to play it when it was finished. Naturally, he didn't believe I would pull through with it because I was spacey and horrible with time management. Like he thought, I never got it done (I didn't even start it) until the summer before my senior year at high school.
I was at a jazz camp when Razzmatazz thundered down from the heavens (the idea really did come that suddenly). I was walking with some friends to lunch when one of them said, "You know, jazz shuffles always sound so happy. I wonder what a minor shuffle would sound like ... ?" From there, the song practically wrote itself.
